VERMAARKLIKHEID, DUIVENHOKS RIVER - SOUTH CAPE COAST

KLEINEFONTEIN

The house, Kleinefontein was built 200 years ago, as a hunting lodge for the then, mayor of Swellendam. In the early 1800s it was bought by the Barry family and was frequented by the likes of Lord Charles Somerset, then Governor of the Cape. The past lives of Kleinefontein hover in every room, as tangible as if they were nailed to the walls between the antelope heads and East African spears. This is Colonial living at it’s best, it doesn’t get better than this.

Kleinefontein is located at the mouth of the Duivenhoks River at Puntjie, 20 minutes from the peaceful and undeveloped country hamlet of Vermaarklikheid (approximately 4 hours drive from Cape Town) . The Duivenhoks River Estuary is the cleanest and most pristine estuary in South Africa and lies between Stilbaai and the Breede River. It is 45 minutes from the N2 and marks the transition between the Overberg and the famous “Garden Route”, the road that takes one up the East Coast of South Africa.
