The island is approximately 55 square kilometers (11km long x 5.5 km wide), and lies 14km offshore.

Some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the world is available off Benguerra’s shores with the surrounding coral reefs rich in sea life.  The archipelago is one of the last remaining habitats of the endangered Dugong.

Inland, Benguerra Island comprises forest, savannah, freshwater lakes and wetland eco-systems that sustain a diverse population of fauna and flora. Fresh water crocodiles can be found in the three lakes, bearing testimony to the island’s mainland past. The island, which is home to approximately 140 bird species, was declared a National Park in 1971.

There are four different kinds of accommodation at Benguerra – each with their unique characteristics and attractions.

The Cabanas
There are Cabanas built right on the edge of the beach. Romantic and elegant, the suites offer guests the chance to experience the ultimate island getaway.

The Casitas

Villa Chibuene
Villa Chibuene is the epitome of exclusivity. The luxury furnishings and private facilities make it an ideal place for those wanting unsurpassed comfort and privacy, honeymooners and families.
A personal chef prepares all meals at the Villa, although the main lodge’s dining facilities are also available to Villa guests, if desired.

The Villas at Benguerra
The Villas at Benguerra is an extension of the award wining Benguerra Lodge. The Niassa Reserve in Mozambique is twice the size of the Kruger National Park and with just 8 luxury East-African styled tents, Lugenda Wilderness Camp is a destination for the discerning few. Lugenda Wilderness Camp provides visitors with the true quality of wilderness that is rare to find today. On walks and game drives guests experience raw Africa at its wildest, but within the confines of camp guests are cosseted and pampered.

Stylish tents, a scenic swimming pool, fascinating guides, shady guest areas and views over the river keep guests content for hours.

The camp consists of a main building housing a reading lounge area, self service bar and dining area.On either side of the main building, are four East African-styled luxury tents – no more than 40 meters from the Lugenda River. The main pool is directly in front of the main building, virtually on the banks of the Lugenda River.

Accommodation consists of 8 luxury East African-style tents, 6 x Kings and 2 x Twins. All tents are fully mosquito-screened and have an en-suite bathroom with bath and shower, ceiling fan, hair dryer, safe and wooden viewing deck. The tents have a concrete screed floor with individual Victorian styled deep tub and shower. The tents are situated underneath large wild fig trees, which attract wild Elephant during the early morning and late afternoon.

The lodge is constructed from natural indigenous elements of thatch and local hardwood Sambiri poles which have been combined in perfect harmony with plaster walls and wood frame doors and windows. The result is the relaxed yet stylish finish.

The property extends right on to the beach and the lodge buildings are set back about 100m up the ridge, overlooking the sea.

The Main Building houses the lounge, reception, main bar, restaurant and kitchen .This welcoming thatched structure invites guests to unwind in the comfort of its open spaces and passages which lead into the garden, allowing for a refreshing escape and uninterrupted views of the sea. In the event of inclement weather, awnings are available to offer protection, without blocking the magnificent views.

The large comfortable couches in the lounge provide the perfect place to relax indoors and the main bar is equally well-positioned overlooking the lush gardens, palm trees and pool in the distance.

The spectacular 550,000 litre infinity pool on the beach front offers a welcome retreat from the heat of the day. It boasts a gentle sloped beach entry, martini double tiered seats, and Jacuzzi jets and bubbles with a stunning water feature.

The pool bar, overlooking the gardens, pool and beach, offers a more relaxed atmosphere. A big screen TV for the sports fans, a selection of drinks, shooters, and cocktails are available from this fully equipped bar.
The beach entry accommodates wheel chair access, and is perfect for children, elderly or disabled patrons.
A depth of 2m allows for scuba training, without compromising the comfort of other guests.

The well-kept gardens are an appealing blend of indigenous bush on the slopes around the chalets and pathways, and tropical lush green palms and lawns of the guest entertainment areas.
The rolling green lawns of the gardens around the main building, pool and pool bar, are peppered with palm trees, offering shade on the hot summer days. Scattered paved areas amongst the trees offer quiet shaded areas for drinks, meetings, meals or to simply relax.

A small dam on the property offers children an opportunity to fish for small fresh water fish while dad is chasing the game fish at sea.

Vilanculos is approximately 700km north of Maputo. Daily flights are available from OR Tambo International to Vilanculos. The trip from the Airport to the boat takes approximately 10 min and guests are transported in a 14-seater minibus. The boat transfer to Dugong Beach Lodge takes approximately 45 minutes. Transfers must be booked at the time of making a reservation and are charged separately.

Ibo Island lodge is located on the prime waterfront site, where romantic dhows sail out to sea on each high tide.

TRANSFERS TO IBO ISLAND:

Guests fly to Pemba International airport (Cabo Delgado) where they are met by a representative and then transferred by light aircraft to Ibo Island.

The breathtakingly beautiful flight affords guests a chance to take a scenic flight over some of the Quirimbas Archipelago and is a highlight.

Boat transfers are also available to link Ibo with neighbouring properties and resorts.
