Kleinefontein is located at the mouth of the Duivenhoks River at Puntjie, 20 minutes from the peaceful and undeveloped country hamlet of Vermaarklikheid (approximately 4 hours drive from Cape Town) . Whale season is a great time for being entertained by the numerous whales that come to San Sebastian bay – you can sometimes hear whales blowing and there is always a show as they jump in rougher seas or glide slowly past beyond the breakers when the ocean is calm.

Days become slow, rhythms set by the changing tides. Low tide is good for swimming and walking for kilometres along the yellow sand to find that perfect swimming spot or beachcombing for shells and other treasures. High tide can be wild and exciting with waves crashing up the beach, time to build a sandcastle or beach fort with the endless supply of driftwood. Afternoons are lazy, a chance to find that perfect spot on the deck or in the hammock to read and sleep. Meals are always a focus, slowly prepared to satisfy the hunger one only gets from an excess of clean, fresh sea air and sunshine. Evenings are soft and warm as the sun sets over the distant mountains and the sky explodes with colour.

Head inland for a walk up the hill and along the road through the fynbos. Proteas and pristine fynbos abound. You are sure to find small treasures along the way – tortoises, hares, mongeese, porcupines and field mice amongst other small creatures and a multitude of bird species in the bushes. There are a number of small buck who roam the unfenced properties along the coast, regularly spotted as they use the road to move easily through the veld, but once seen they dart into and are lost in the fynbos within seconds.

Who isn’t over those pretentiously minimalist, pale-palated villas where it’s de rigueur to eat anything other than white food and where parents are advised to roll their children in cling-wrap and seal both ends? Because this beach house is well-known South African artist Beezy Bailey’s holiday home, the relaxed atmosphere is testament to the family’s love of the place.

Beezy’s Chinese gangster-cushions glower from the couch – a spark of personality from the artist himself whose signature textiles cover much of the comfortable furniture throughout. The house itself is the perfect place to stay and relax, once you arrive it will be hard to leave for anything. The living area is open plan with court yard pool in the middle which serves to protect from the breeze, the perfect sun tanning station! The colours are all neutral and calming tying into the organic surroundings.

The furniture emphasises the comfort factor and is beautiful in its simplicity for low maintenance easy living.
Huge sliding doors open up on both side of the house so on windless days there can be an open flow to the sea, inside becomes one with outside nature.

There is a private board walk down to the beach, deck chairs and bean bags on which to relax, a cushion laden cosy corner for reading books, catching the sunset or having a snooze. The pergolas are covered and balau screens open and shut depending on where you need protection. The west coast weather can be harsh so its all about finding your cocooning spot.

This just may be in your bed! There are 6 bedrooms all with supa comfy mattresses and 100% cotton sheets and down duvets. Well equipped bathrooms with white towels and heated towel rails add to the comfort factor.

Meal times are a pleasure as cooking here becomes a relaxing ritual, the sea and the view and creativity will overwhelm you. The kitchen is very well equipped as being at the beach house means having great food to accompany your surroundings. There’s two dishwashers and deep sinks to hide all the ugly bits and plenty of fridge space and ice to keep the drinks cold.
